Races I've Run (And You Can Too!)

These are real races I've run myself. Some are just for fun and some raise money for good causes.

Race Against Hate

When: Father's Day

Distance: 10k & 5k Run/Walk, Youth Mile & Half Mile Fun Run

The Race Against Hate honors a basketball coach named Ricky Byrdsong who was known for his kindness. He lost his life to a hate crime, and the race carries his legacy of kindness forward, while raising money to support social justice causes.

Every year I put together a team of friends to run it, and we raise money for the cause. You could do the same with your friends someday. It's proof that running can pull you off your screen and into something that actually matters.

Turkey Trot

When: Thanksgiving Day

Distance: 5k Run/Walk

The Turkey Trot is a fun way to kick off the holiday season. It happens Thanksgiving morning, and you'll probably see people you know there. Some people wear turkey costumes, and some bring portable speakers to keep the energy up. It can be cold, so don't forget your hat and gloves.

You can also bring canned food to donate to a local food pantry, a great cause to be a part of on Thanksgiving.

Walk & Run (School Events)

When: Check your school's calendar

Distance: Varies by school

Lots of schools host their own Walk & Run events, and I got to help out at one at a school near me. It was awesome watching kids of all speeds get out there and just move, whether they were racing or just taking their time.

If your school has an event like this, it's worth checking out. And if it doesn't maybe you could be the one to ask about starting one.
